US: Launching your campaign with Meta
What you need to get started with your Facebook and Instagram presence
Launching a new political campaign or organization can be both exciting and challenging. Fortunately, our platforms offer robust tools to support your launch. To ensure a smooth setup, refer to the checklist below for essential steps in organic and advertising strategies.
Secure your profile
Before you create your campaign or organization’s Page, make sure that your Facebook profile is secure:
- Privacy Checkup will help you determine who can see what you share and who can find your profile on Facebook.
- Security Checkup will help you log out of unused apps and browsers, set up two-factor authentication and strengthen your password.
- Two-Factor Authentication is a security feature that helps protect your Facebook account in addition to your password.
Create your campaign Page
A Page is a public presence designed for connecting with people at scale who you may or may not know personally. We recommend people and organizations involved in politics create a Facebook Page, rather than a profile. Your Page is managed by profiles (such as your own profile, and that of employees at your organization or on your campaign team) and will have access to tools such as Page Insights and the ability to advertise. Be sure to add a profile picture or organizational logo, and a cover photo. Learn more about how to create your Page here and how to request a verified badge here.
Secure your Page
The best way to secure your Page is to enroll the profiles that manage your campaign Page in Advanced Protection, which offers candidates and all of their staff a way to further secure their own accounts. By enrolling, we help you (1) adopt stronger account security protections, like two-factor authentication, and (2) monitor for potential hacking threats.
Start posting to your Page
There are many ways on Facebook to show what your campaign or organization stands for. You can add your perspective on breaking news, solicit input from your community, share a candid photo or Story to highlight your personality, or even bring your followers along on your campaign with Live video. Keep in mind that Facebook is where people connect with friends, family and communities that matter to them. Authenticity is key—one of the best ways to connect with supporters is to show them who you are and what you are about. Learn more content best practices here.
Understand our advertising requirements
After you've secured your accounts and set up a Page, follow the below requirements if you decide to run ads:
- Ensure you have admin access to your campaign Page, either directly through the Page or through Business Manager.
- Set up a Business Manager to organize your campaign's assets and manage permissions.. If you work with an agency, you’ll be able to create a partnership with their business.
- If you’re running ads yourself, create an Ad Account in your Business Manager.
- Ensure you have set up a payment method for your Ad Account.
- Comply with our policies for ads about social issues, elections or politics:
- Get individually authorized to run ads via your Facebook personal profile account
- Create a disclaimer by going to the “Issue, Electoral or Political Ads” tab in Page Settings
- Link your disclaimer to your newly created Ad Account for your campaign
- Note: you must complete all of these steps in order to run ads
- When you create your ad, ensure that you select the “social issues, elections, or politics” in the Special Ad Category in Ads Manager at the campaign level, before submitting your ad for review.
