How to Create a DIY Studio to Improve Your Brand Photography

If you’ve been inspired by Facebook ads or posts from other brands, know that developing compelling ad visuals doesn’t require a fancy camera or an expensive studio. With a mobile phone in hand, you’re already minutes away from getting an eye-catching product shot, and we can help with the rest. Read on for tips that will get you started with setting up your space and photographing original content, beginning with: how to create a do-it-yourself studio.

Before you get started, run through the steps below:

  • Set up your at-home studio near a bright natural light source, like a window. You can even shoot outside. Cloudy days are great to avoid harsh sunlight.
  • If your window or light source isn't strong enough, you can use white paper or poster board to bounce the light from the window back into your setup.
  • While shooting, make sure to leave enough room around your product, giving you space and flexibility to crop later for posts (1:1) and Facebook or Instagram Stories (9:16).
  • Use household items, like books, or buy a mobile tripod to stabilize your device.
  • Remove clutter from the frame so your products are the main focus.
  • Reposition your camera to get more use out of your space and create a diverse library of assets. Change angles, capture detailed close-up shots and consider swapping out backgrounds.

Watch the video below to see each of these steps put into practice.
