Our Ongoing Commitment to Online Safety

Update on November 1, 2022 at 9:00AM PT: We’ve received accreditation from the Media Rating Council (MRC) for content-level Brand Safety on Facebook. This Brand Safety accreditation is of Meta’s Partner Monetization Policies, Content Monetization Policies and associated content-level brand safety and suitability controls applied to Facebook In-Stream Video and Instant Articles in desktop, mobile web and mobile in-app. For more information on this accreditation, visit our blog here.

Update on July 21, 2021 at 11:30AM PT: As part of our ongoing engagement with GARM (Global Alliance for Responsible Media), we've begun an independent audit of our content monetization policies and brand safety controls with the MRC on July 21, 2021.

At Facebook, we've been taking significant, meaningful and measurable action to combat hate speech and harmful content for years. We do not want hate on our platforms. We do not profit from hate and have no incentive to tolerate it.

While fighting hate is everyone's responsibility, we recognize and accept our role in helping tackle harmful content online. We should be held accountable for our actions, and we invite continued accountability of our efforts so that we can make the most meaningful and fastest progress possible.

Over the years we’ve done things like:

  • Developed our Community Standards to prohibit harmful content. With more than 3 billion people on our platform, we know that zero tolerance doesn’t mean zero occurrence.
  • Invested heavily in both AI systems and human review teams — we have more than 35,000 people working on safety and security — so that the rate at which we proactively detect content we remove before it's reported to us has steadily increased.
  • As part of our continued commitment to transparency, we publish our Community Standards Enforcement Report on a quarterly basis to more effectively track our progress and demonstrate our ongoing efforts to make Facebook and Instagram safe and inclusive.
  • Established an Oversight Board with independent judgment to help Facebook answer some of the most significant and difficult questions around freedom of expression online: what to take down, what to leave up and why.

We continue to work with industry bodies and other tech platforms to share knowledge, build consensus and help make all platforms safer for people and advertisers. For example, we’re working with the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), a global collaboration with agencies, media companies, platforms and industry associations, to continue to improve digital safety.

Although our work here is never finished, the document below shares a comprehensive look at what we have done to limit hate and harmful content on our platforms and make Facebook safer. We are committed to continuing our work to make Facebook a welcoming place for all.
