Celebrations
Women of all ages shared their favourite Christmas moments on Facebook and Instagram. The celebration didn’t end there, with New Year’s Eve just around the corner. Australians rang in 2017 with fireworks displays and Facebook and Instagram conversations around the nation.
Rivalries
As Australia heats up in December, so too do the cricket rivalries among the states. Men of all ages turned to Facebook and Instagram to cheer for their state team in the upcoming Big Bash League, whether it be Brisbane Heat, Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers or Adelaide Strikers. As the major sponsor of the league, KFC received its fair share of conversation.
On Facebook, young men commiserated with Rhonda Rousey as she was defeated in 48 seconds against opponent Amanda Nunes.
In commemoration
The loss of pop star George Michael captured the hearts of older women on both Facebook and Instagram as they remembered his best moments with his band Wham! throughout the 80s and his later hits—like “Freedom!”—in the 90s.
Women of all ages were also saddened by the sudden loss of Carrie Fisher. She was remembered for her role in Star Wars as Princess Leia and for her best-selling novels “Wishful Drinking” and “Postcards from the Edge.” The following day, people—especially older women on Facebook—were shocked by the news of the death of Fisher’s mother, Debbie Reynolds.
