Digital tools remain key driver for small businesses growth

By Justin Osofsky, Head of Online Sales, Operations, and Partnerships

At the start of the pandemic, school closures forced former elementary school teachersLacey Bernard and Lulu Cheng out of the classroom and into their homes. The friends found themselves itching to start something new. Both avid readers with a love for education and their Chinese heritage, they noticed a gap in the market for bilingual children’s books and started to write their own stories. Soon, what started as a hobby grew into a full-time business called Bitty Bao, based out of Orange County and San Diego, CA.

Now in business for over two years, Lacey and Lulu credit digital tools as their primary way of selling products and building their business stating that, “Since launching our business, we’ve relied heavily on Meta platforms to help spread awareness about our brand. In the first two years, 95% of our sales were generated from our active participation and marketing across Instagram and Facebook.”

Stories like Lacey and Lulu’s reinforce Meta’s latest research findings on the state of small business focused on the use of digital tools, released today during National Small Business Week. Over the last three years, the adoption of digital tools by SMBs is a consistently positive trend, with our newest data showing that more than half (57%) of US small business owners surveyed report using digital tools to communicate with customers.1

Bitty Bao is one one 200 million businesses that come to Meta’s platforms every day to reach new customers, build their brand, and grow. And when small businesses grow, the economy grows too.

Across the US, on average, each dollar spent on Meta ads yields $3.31 in revenue for our advertisers and business activity on Meta is linked to over $415 billion in annual economic activity and over 3 million jobs in the US.

Our research also shows that 34% of surveyed small businesses have seen their sales increase thanks to the use of digital tools. We spoke with Olivia Chen and Pauline Ang, CEO and founder of Twrl Milk Tea in San Francisco, CA about how they are using digital tools to connect with customers and sell their tea. They shared that they have been creating VIP Groups on Facebook to nurture loyal customers who test new products and provide them with feedback and inspiration. Their advice to other small business owners is to ask daily: “What are we doing that is going to drive the business forward today?” Recently, Olivia has answered this question by leaning into Reels as part of her marketing strategy. People often comment on how creative her posts are, asking “who does your Reels?” Olivia is proud to say that she creates them herself and suggests that small business owners try Reels templates as a way to get started and to learn the ropes.

Advertising on Reels is also helping Anish Patel, Founder & Winemaker of natural wine brand Tinto Amorio, in Los Angeles, CA connect with customers on both the consumer and business side of the beverage industry - and boosting his sales in both areas. For other small business owners who are experimenting with Reels, Anish suggests:, “Keep testing and experimenting. If something doesn’t work the first time, don’t give up.” Anish also noted that having authentic creative that is true to your brand also helps create loyalty with customers.

We have seen time and again the resilience and ingenuity of small business owners. Their ability to leverage digital tools combined with the support of their communities to thrive are the subject of a short film premiering this week from Meta called “They Came From All Over.” Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, the film highlights the comeback story of Tom Muholland, Owner of Mulholland Grocery in Malvern Iowa which burned down in a tragic fire in 2021.
