How to optimize content for social search on Meta technologies
In part 1, we established that consumers now operate in two search modes, traditional search for utility and social search for influence, and that social search is where net-new customers are found. But the real story isn't just that social search exists. It's what it does that traditional search can't.
Traditional search captures demand. Someone knows what they want; the search engine finds it. Social search operates differently. It creates demand by surfacing products in context, through trusted voices, in moments of openness. And that changes everything about where brands should show up.
The first spark of intent happens before a query is typed
What actually sparks a purchase? The data says it's overwhelmingly social1:
- 61% see something visually appealing
- 46% get a product recommendation from someone they know
- 44% come across something unexpected but interesting
- 38% see someone use it in a post or video
- 31% see a creator or influencer talking about it
What does that mean for you? Four of the top five purchase triggers are inherently social experiences. These aren't behaviors you buy with a keyword bid. They're moments you earn with the right content on the right surface. If you're only present at the point of purchase, you've missed the moment that determined what gets purchased.
The formats that create demand
People don't just discover products on social. They build conviction. And the formats doing the heaviest lifting are visual, human, and contextual1:
- 61% encounter short videos and reels while shopping, the #1 format
- 43% encounter creator demos, reviews, and recommendations
- 41% encounter UGC and customer reviews
- Reels ranked #1 most helpful format for moving forward after initial interest (26%)
Social search doesn't just surface products. It helps explain why they matter. A reel showing a creator using a product on a rainy morning commute does something a search result link never can. It puts the product in someone's life before they've even considered buying it.
Demand creation makes people buy faster and more confidently
Here's where this gets concrete. Social search doesn't just create awareness. It compresses the funnel1:
- 63% say purchases happen faster when social plays a role
- 65% feel more confident in their purchase
That's not a top-of-funnel metric. That's consideration and conversion influence. The visual proof, the creator endorsement, the comments section full of real people validating the choice. That's what builds the confidence to buy. And it happens in-feed, not on a search results page.
And it shows up in the economics. When Measured analyzed 10,000+ campaigns using geo-tested incrementality, the only way to measure what Meta technologies actually caused, they found Meta technologies’ efficiency at acquiring new customers is 2.3x higher than search2. The formats that win in social search aren't just engagement plays. They're the mechanism that finds your next customer more efficiently than a keyword bid ever could.
What Winning Brands Do Differently
The brands winning in social search aren't just posting content. They're building for discovery:
Keyword-first captions. Meta technologies’ search indexes caption text, not just hashtags. Write captions like consumers type queries: "best running shoes for marathons" not #RunningLife.
Reels as searchable assets. Build content that answers what people actually type into Instagram search. "Is it worth it?", "How do I style…", "What's the best…"
Creator partnerships as trust infrastructure. 31% say a creator talking about a product sparks their interest1. That's not a nice-to-have. It's how trust is built in social search.
Product tags to close the loop. Every reel, carousel, and feed post is a potential conversion moment. Shorten the path from "I want that" to "I bought it."
