Why social search and traditional search aren't competing – they're coexisting
Consumers don't think in channels. They think in questions. But where they go for answers has fundamentally changed.
Google searches per US user are down nearly 20% YoY1. The content is the destination. But this isn't social replacing traditional search – it's the same customer with two different search modes, and most brands are still building content for only one.
Two modes, one consumer
Traditional search is utility. I know what I want, find it for me. Text-based links. Trust comes from domain authority and star ratings.
Social search is influence. I'm curious, show me what's trusted. Visual-first: reels, creators, demos. Trust comes from peer validation and creator credibility.
Google answers the question. Meta technologies show the experience. 78% of Google queries now return video results – even Google is chasing visual. But on Meta, visual content isn't bolted onto a results page.2 It's native.
What consumers are actually doing3
- 92% use social platforms for product info vs 79% for search engines
- 58% find social more enjoyable than traditional search for discovery
- 61% say a purchase starts with seeing something visually appealing
- 63% buy faster when social plays a role
- 65% feel more confident in the purchase
What does that mean for you? The first spark of intent happens before a query is typed. Four of the top five purchase triggers are inherently social. These aren't behaviours that you buy with a keyword bid. They're moments you earn.
And the business outcomes reflect it. When independent researchers measured the actual causal impact of Meta technologies, they found that 64% of Meta's incremental conversions come from new-to-brand customers.3 People who wouldn't have bought without Meta technologies in the mix. Social search isn't just shifting attention. It's driving net-new growth that traditional search alone doesn't reach.
The brands winning in search aren't choosing one mode. They're appearing in both.
